Regent University College of Science and Technology Staffs staff up in arms over unpaid salaries

Some Academic staff of Regent University College of Science and Technology have given the university’s management up to Friday to settle all salaries owed them – including arrears – or they will withdraw their services to the institution.
The staff – who constitute the Regent University Senior Members Association (RUSMA) – claimed they have not been paid since May. They are alleging that some money meant for staff salaries has gone into a building project which the university is bent on finishing in a year, despite compelling financial challenges. The development has affected staff-management relationship. A member of staff who wants to remain anonymous for now claimed some of his colleagues “are even being owed as far back as April”. When reached for his comments, Vice President of RUSMA, Kwadwo Atta Opoku said, ”This is purely an internal matter and we want it to remain as such”. He wouldn’t say anything further than that.
(Prof. E. Larbi - President of RUCST)
UNEXPECTED DEMAND
But the University’s Director of Communications and Marketing, Henry Osborn Quarshie, explained, “the contractor for our building project had told us he would need money in a year but he came back unexpectedly to demand some payment, so we had to advance him something and that affected our ability to settle all staff” “Indeed, even before we paid the contractor, our bankers had given us assurance that they will grant us a facility to offset any looming crisis but that also has delayed, hence the situation we find ourselves in”, he added. He said for now, payment was being done in piecemeal fashion till all outstanding salaries are settled. He also disclosed that fees from the weekend and summer schools were not forthcoming and that had further worsened the situation.

                                       (School Under Construction)

CHANCELLOR OF UNIVERSITY’S RESPONSE
Dr Kwabena Darko (President Darko Farms)
– who was once a presidential candidate – appealed for calm in his communication with RUMSA, fearing any bad press could “be detrimental to the image” of a school working on getting a Charter. He pleaded that the internal challenges should be addressed internally to avoid the school washing its dirty linen in public. Dr. Darko had promised to meet management in order to thrash out the issues but other pressing business of his disrupted his intention. “We are used to this recurring decimal. We need our salaries, enough of the empty promises”, an affected staff in an interview rejected Mr. Darko’s plea for a second chance to meet management.
                            Meeting with University’s President
After several memos to the office of the University’s President – Rev. Professor Emmanuel Kingley Larbi – went without reply, RUSMA executives were invited to a meeting at the behest of the President on 27th July, 2016. The meeting was held at his boardroom. In attendance were: Prof. E. Kingsley Larbi, Professor Ernest Aryeetey (Former Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, now a member of Regent’s Board), Nancy Ansah (Registrar), Justice Appiah (Deputy Registrar), Henry Quarshie (Director, Communication and Marketing), Nana Ampadu (Head of Human Resource) and Edmund Noi (Deputy Accountant) – all representing management. RUSMA was represented by Kwadwo Attah Opoku, David Botwe and Kobla Afadzinu Sewornu. Prof. Larbi, at the meeting acknowledged receipt of RUSMA’s letter, adding that everything captured in it was true apart from the point that said; “RUSMA members feel neglected and we think Management have taken us for granted”. He said the meeting should have been held earlier but circumstances made it impossible. RUSMA put across their concern that numerous MEMOs sent to the President’s office had not received any response, necessitating their position that management didn’t care about their plight. In his response, Rev. Prof Larbi explained that they had made provision for the lean season that is May, June but they used the budgeted funds to pay off the contractor who was working on the school’s building project, hoping to get some funds to pay salaries but things did not work out. He said they had managed to pay the junior staff and some senior staff who came with genuine cases. “Genuine cases” here means “very pressing financial needs”. Such people were given a part of their salary for the time being. On the question of the specific time frame for payment he said “soonest”. On his part, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, who has been appointed Director of the University’s Medical School that is yet to take off, reiterated the president’s call for restraint, stating that some money meant for staff salaries had been channelled into the project, hence the difficulty in paying staff, but promised a resolution of the situation For now, the unpaid staff have no timelines with which to wait for their salaries as their patience reaches tipping point.

Obama's Brother says he is voting for Trump in November!!

Malik Obama (L)                              Donald Trump (R)

President Barack Obama's half-brother, Malik Obama, says he will vote for Republican nominee Donald Trump in the U.S. election in November because he likes the candidate and he is unhappy with his brother's leadership.
Malik, who is in his 50s, told Reuters by phone from Obama's ancestral home of Kogelo in western Kenya that he supports Trump's policies, especially his focus on security.
"He appeals to me and also I think that he is down to earth and he speaks from the heart and he is not trying to be politically correct. He's just straight-forward," he said.
Malik, a U.S. citizen, has lived in Washington since 1985 where he worked with various firms before becoming an independent financial consultant.
Trump's stance against Muslims coming in to the United States was understandable even to Muslims like himself, Malik said.
"I'm a Muslim, of course, but you can't have people going around just shooting people and killing people just in the name of Islam," he said.
He criticized President Obama's record in the White House saying he had not done much for the American people and his extended family despite the high expectations that accompanied his election in 2008, both in the United States and Kenya.
The two men appear to have drifted apart but were previously close. Malik has visited the president in the Oval office and was also best man at Barack's wedding.
Obama's election created much excitement in Kenya especially in Kogelo village where their father was born before going to study at the University of Hawaii.
Obama visited Nairobi, in the first ever trip by a sitting U.S. president to the East African nation last July, and promised to visit more often when he leaves office.
Malik defended his right to criticize his brother, citing freedom of expression.
"To each his own. I speak my mind and I'm not going to be put in a box just because my brother is the President of the United States," Malik said.

Ghanaians consume more alcohol to get over economic hardship – Nielsen

Despite the slowdown of the Ghanaian economy, there seem to be an increase in volume of sales of alcoholic beverages as consumers shift their spending to discretionary items.
This is according to the Managing Director of Nielsen West Africa, Lampe Omoyele.
He argues that most Ghanaians at the peak of the economic challenges resorted to alcohol as a way of dealing with their economic challenge.
“Globally it’s been seen that during economic challenges, people turn to look for escape and alcohol is one of the routes of escape. But one of the things that we also find is that during the period of economic challenges in Ghana, people resorted to alcohol. The story is same in Nigeria as it is also in the situation Ghana used to be during the economic down turn,” he asserted.
Mr. Omoyele also added, “The growth of alcoholic beverages in quarter one of 2015 has been driven by Origin, the innovative Origin and it is because of the innovation that we see that growth.”
Lampe Omoyele made these remarks during  Citi Fm’s collaboration with the Chartered Instituted of Marketing Ghana as part of Citi Business Festival on the topic “Winning With the Consumer and the Shopper” at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra.
Consumers acting rationally to changing economic situations
Mr. Omoyele maintained that even though the Ghanaian economy may be on the road to recovery, brands that will survive or stay in competition are those that will be able to provide the needs of the consumer.
He says available statistics on year-to-date 2016 comparing with year-to-date 2015 shows that the total basket value growth in Ghana is at 11% as consumers are spending more on food related items and also home and personal care.
Lampe Omoyele made a strong case that increasing inflation, cedi depreciation, power crisis, VAT on petroleum and taxes among others have contributed to Ghana becoming one of the countries with the least affordable basket.
“When there is inflation but wages do not increase to correspond, then consumers’ disposable income will decline. Ghana’s inflation has increased significantly in the last 24 months from 14% to over 18% in 2016.”
“When that happens then consumers begin to rationalize. This means they don’t have enough money to spend and they rationalize by doing away with some of the things they feel are not important,” he observed.
It is clear that in the almost past two to three decades, Ghanaian consumers’ shopping habits have changed dramatically as incomes have either risen or dwindled depending on your incomes levels and new products and concepts have entered the Ghana market.
The corresponding effect is that consumer habits in Ghana continue to evolve and examining generations of consumers, it can reveal certain shopping trends with the rich going for the high end goods and services but the average Ghanaian also begin to look for alternatives.
But it is clear that both the high end and average consumers all resort to taking of alcohol as a means to solving problems they encounter or when in happy mode.
Ghana has low consumer purchasing power
Meanwhile Ghana is said to be among countries with low consumer purchasing power.
According to the report, Uganda has the most affordable basket at 10.99 dollars, Lesotho follows with 14.70 dollars, Swaziland is next at 14.99 dollars and Kenya and South Africa are at 15.06 and 15.33 dollars respectively.
For the list of countries with the least affordable basket where Ghana falls in, South Sudan is the highest at 38.60 dollars, Angola is at number two with 33.57 dollars, DRC comes in at number three with 28.80 dollars, and Ghana is at number four at 27.50 dollars followed by Cote D’Ivore with 24.55 dollars. –

Zuma’s wife who allegedly tried to poison him is ‘homeless’ – Report

Since being kicked out of Nkandla for allegedly trying to poison the president, life has reportedly become increasingly tough for MaNtuliZuma.

Sunday tabloid Sunday Sun reported today that First Lady Nompumelelo MaNtuliZuma is evidently facing serious personal difficulties after being expelled from Nkandla where she lived the life of a “royal Zulu wife”.

According to a group of observers that the tabloid spoke to in the Hermannsburg area near Greytown in KwaZuluNatal, she is living “under cover” in the rural area. An induna in the area told the paper that MaNtuli had been looking for land to build a house, but that he wanted her to follow the correct
procedures and not expect any “special treatment because she’s MaNtuli”.Last year the Sunday Times broke the sensational story that Russian intelligence agents had discovered that MaNtuli had been involved in a plot to poison her husband, President Jacob Zuma. They linked this to a period in which the president had fallen inexplicably ill.

Since then, she was banned from Nkandla and sidelined, and it appears this remains the case.

A Zuma family insider allegedly told the Sunday Times that MaNtuli had done “something terrible that could put her in jail for a long time”.

MaNtuli confirmed in August last year that State Security Minister David Mahlobo asked her to leave Nkandla so that a “sensitive matter” could be investigated.

MaNtuli has denied being aware of or part of any poison plot and offered her full cooperation into the investigation.

President Zuma’s brother Mike Zuma told Sunday Sun that he wasn’t aware of MaNtuli being homeless, but that she should approach her husband if she needed help.
