TORENTZ shuts down, Largest Torrent Meta-Search Engine Says Farewell
Founded in 2003, Torrentz has been a stable factor in the torrent community for over 13 years.
With millions of visitors per day the site grew out to become one of the most visited torrent sites, but today this reign ends, as the popular meta-search engine has announced its shutdown.
A few hours ago and without warning, Torrentz disabled its search functionality. At first sight the main page looks normal but those who try to find links to torrents will notice that they’re no longer there.
Instead, the site is now referring to itself in the past tense, suggesting that after more than a decade the end has arrived.
“Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines,” the text reads.
The site’s user are no longer able to login either. Instead, they see the following message: “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”

Torrentz itself never hosted any torrent files but did have a takedown procedure in place, allowing copyright holders to take down infringing links.
Not all rightsholders were happy with the site though. Both RIAA and MPAA have reported the site to the U.S. Government in recent years, which repeatedly placed it its annual “Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets.”
With Torrentz.eu and KickassTorrents both shutting down, the torrent comunity lost two of the largest sites in a period of three weeks. This means that millions of users will have to find new homes.
Founded a few weeks before The Pirate Bay, Torrentz was one of the oldest torrent sites still around. When Torrentz first came online the site was hosting torrent files, but it swiftly reinvented itself as a meta-search engine, the biggest of its kind.
Breaking story, more updates will follow

Ghana to switch off analogue TV by September 2017
The Deputy Minister of Communication, Edward Ato Sarpong
The Ministry of Communication has told Citi Business News
Ghana would be switching from analogue TV transmission to digital TV
broadcasting by end of September 2017, barring any hitches.
It follows the completion of the first phase of the digital migration project in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.
The second phase which will include the other regions is expected to be completed in October 2016.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Business News, the Deputy Minister of Communication, Edward Ato Sarpong said the official switch on date for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) transmission is end of October 2016.
“The public awareness has already began and so between now and next year September, which is about a period of 15 to 16 months should be enough for all of us to acquire a set-of-boxes if we have to and for those who can afford a digital TV set we would have bought one,” he said.
According to Mr. Sarpong, the switch on date has been agreed up to take place in October.
“What we are saying that between now and 31st October, 2016 will be the official digital switch on date,” he said.
He stated that after running the test transmission of the DTT network project for close to 5 months, all the analogue transmitters and frequencies will be switched off in the country to allow television broadcasting platforms to switch from broadcasting programs in analogue transmission to digital.
“There has to be an official switch on date and an official switch off date and we are taking October 2016 as switch on and September 2017 as the switch off date, “he said.
Mr. Sarpong said with the completion of the installation of the digital infrastructure, “the government would allow a one-year transition period for people to acquire the needed facilities for the migration of their television sets from analogue to digital”. Thereafter, he said, there would be a complete switch-off from analogue to digital broadcasting in the country”
He further stated that an independent body, under the supervision of the National Media Commission (NMC), would be set up to manage the digital platform.
Moving to digital platform
The Ministry of Communications in October last year, signed a contract with K-Net Limited for the roll out of the country’s DTT network project.
The contract demanded the completion of the DTT network within 12 months as the project was structured to be executed in nine months.
The digital television offers far more channels to viewers with good sound and picture quality.
Viewers with the existing analogue TV sets can also receive digital signals by attaching a Set-Top Box to their TV sets.
In the past two years the National Communications Authority has been carrying out a transition of television broadcasting services in the frequency 174-230 MHz and 470-862 MHz from analogue to digital technology.
It also means that after the decommissioning, the frequencies that will be freed will revert to the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Ghanaians consume more alcohol to get over economic hardship – Nielsen
Despite the slowdown of the Ghanaian economy, there seem to be an
increase in volume of sales of alcoholic beverages as consumers shift
their spending to discretionary items.
This is according to the Managing Director of Nielsen West Africa, Lampe Omoyele.
He argues that most Ghanaians at the peak of the economic challenges resorted to alcohol as a way of dealing with their economic challenge.
“Globally it’s been seen that during economic challenges, people turn to look for escape and alcohol is one of the routes of escape. But one of the things that we also find is that during the period of economic challenges in Ghana, people resorted to alcohol. The story is same in Nigeria as it is also in the situation Ghana used to be during the economic down turn,” he asserted.
Mr. Omoyele also added, “The growth of alcoholic beverages in quarter one of 2015 has been driven by Origin, the innovative Origin and it is because of the innovation that we see that growth.”
Lampe Omoyele made these remarks during Citi Fm’s collaboration with the Chartered Instituted of Marketing Ghana as part of Citi Business Festival on the topic “Winning With the Consumer and the Shopper” at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra.
Consumers acting rationally to changing economic situations
Mr. Omoyele maintained that even though the Ghanaian economy may be on the road to recovery, brands that will survive or stay in competition are those that will be able to provide the needs of the consumer.
He says available statistics on year-to-date 2016 comparing with year-to-date 2015 shows that the total basket value growth in Ghana is at 11% as consumers are spending more on food related items and also home and personal care.
Lampe Omoyele made a strong case that increasing inflation, cedi depreciation, power crisis, VAT on petroleum and taxes among others have contributed to Ghana becoming one of the countries with the least affordable basket.
“When there is inflation but wages do not increase to correspond, then consumers’ disposable income will decline. Ghana’s inflation has increased significantly in the last 24 months from 14% to over 18% in 2016.”
“When that happens then consumers begin to rationalize. This means they don’t have enough money to spend and they rationalize by doing away with some of the things they feel are not important,” he observed.
It is clear that in the almost past two to three decades, Ghanaian consumers’ shopping habits have changed dramatically as incomes have either risen or dwindled depending on your incomes levels and new products and concepts have entered the Ghana market.
The corresponding effect is that consumer habits in Ghana continue to evolve and examining generations of consumers, it can reveal certain shopping trends with the rich going for the high end goods and services but the average Ghanaian also begin to look for alternatives.
But it is clear that both the high end and average consumers all resort to taking of alcohol as a means to solving problems they encounter or when in happy mode.
Ghana has low consumer purchasing power
Meanwhile Ghana is said to be among countries with low consumer purchasing power.
According to the report, Uganda has the most affordable basket at 10.99 dollars, Lesotho follows with 14.70 dollars, Swaziland is next at 14.99 dollars and Kenya and South Africa are at 15.06 and 15.33 dollars respectively.
For the list of countries with the least affordable basket where Ghana falls in, South Sudan is the highest at 38.60 dollars, Angola is at number two with 33.57 dollars, DRC comes in at number three with 28.80 dollars, and Ghana is at number four at 27.50 dollars followed by Cote D’Ivore with 24.55 dollars. –

FAMOUS MUSIC STAR, PRINCE FOUND DEAD IN HIS HOME
Prince,
a dizzylingly prolific multi-instrumentalist and virtuosic performer,
was found dead at his home and recording studio in Minnesota early on
Thursday, his publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, told The Hollywood
Reporter. He was 57.
Deputies
are on scene at Paisley Park in Chanhassen conducting a death
investigation currently, authorities said. No further details were
immediately available and the cause of death is not being released at
this time.
The performer was born Prince Rogers Nelson June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minn.
He
released his debut album, For You, in 1978, followed by Prince (1979),
Dirty Mind (1980) and Controversy (1981). All of them traded in his
trademark sound - deep synth funk grooves with provocatively sexual
lyrics and heart-piercing ballads sung in pure falsetto.

| Prince |
His
mainstream breakthrough came with back-to-back albums with his backing
band the Revolution: In 1982, 1999 launched several pop and dance floor
hits onto the charts, including “Little Red Corvette” and the title
song, a post-apocalyptic party anthem.
Two
years later he released the album - a soundtrack, actually, to his
movie-starring debut - that would launch him into the same superstar
stratosphere of other 1980s pop titans like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
The
soundtrack was 1984’s Purple Rain, a searing musical backdrop to a
semi-autobiographical tale of “The Kid,” a Minneapolis rocker from an
abusive family. The album launched five singles, two of which - “When
Doves Cry” and Let’s Go Crazy" - went to Number 1 on the Billboard
chart. The title ballad reached Number 2 and has gone on to become one
of the most recognizable rock anthems in history. The soundtrack itself
is frequently cited on music critics’ polls as being one of the best of
all time, and Prince won an Oscar for original score in 1985.
In
the 15 years since, he’s released an astonishing 15 records and toured
tirelessly. His latest tour, dubbed “Piano & a Microphone,” saw him
criss-crossing the globe from Melbourne, Aus., to Oakland, Calif.,
cycling through an intimate, improvised evening of hits performed solo
at a grand piano.
On
the night he learned of his collaborator Vanity’s recent death, Prince
told the crowd, “I just found out a little while ago that someone dear
to us has passed away. So I’m going to dedicate this song to her.“
The song was: Little Red Corvette.”

DR BAAH THREATENS TO SUE GEN. MOSQUITO OVER PHD DISGRACE
![]() |
| Dr Richard Amoako Baah |
Mr Asiedu Nketia, while responding to a question on the station’s breakfast show, Ghana Yensom, on Wednesday, April 13, in connection with the academic’s remarks that about 60% of President John Mahama’s key appointees are northerners, made reference to reports in the media that cast doubts on the authenticity of the political science lecturer’s doctorate degree.

In responding to Mr Asiedu Nketia on Accra News on the same day, Dr Amoako Baah stood by his comments saying: “I have evidence to back it. If you look at this government, it is only Northerners and Ewes occupying key positions; I didn’t say all positions, but that key positions are being occupied by Northerners and Ewes. If you live in Ghana and insist that it is not true, then it means you don’t know what is going on.”
“And Asiedu Nketia says I have a credibility problem, that my Ph.D. is fake. So, today, on this platform, I am telling him to come out and retract those comments he made and apologize lest he will hear from my lawyers. I have offered him the opportunity to come and retract.”
Dr Amoako Baah said because the current government “does not have any good thing to tell Ghanaians”, they resort to hurling abuses at persons who criticize them. “You tell the truth, you get insulted; when men of God say it, they are insulted; and when traditional rulers speak, that is also an issue. So, does the nation belong to only them or what?” he asked.
He said his remarks about the large number of Northerners and Ewes in sensitive government positions was premised on the fact that those were minority ethnic groups. “Northerners make up 12.6% of the population [but] if you check, you will realise that they occupy more than 50 percent of the key government positions. Who is unaware of this fact? Many have said that if you go in search of a job and you don’t bear a northern name, you are not taken,” Dr Amoako Baah asserted.
The outspoken lecturer would not take lightly Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s insinuations about his Ph.D. “because the truth is that if you want to know if someone has a Ph.D., it is very, very easy”.
“It is even more difficult to find out if someone has a master’s than he having a Ph.D. For a Ph.D., at least in America, before you are awarded, you write a dissertation. So, once you see a dissertation, then you know it’s true he has one. If you go online now and type my name, you will see everything.
“So, he means to say that the staff at KNUST aren’t sensible and they have gone for just anybody walking about without a Ph.D. or what? So, what is he saying? He wants to disgrace me? It means he has nothing good to say, so, it’s all about attack.
“He knows what I am saying is true… Akans comprise 67.2 percent [of the population], so, there is no government you can form that the majority are not included, but rather the minorities are in charge. No way. When you do that you are asking for trouble. It’s happened in many countries and what I am saying is that we need to change that. If someone is good, he is good. It doesn’t matter where he comes from.”

Simon-Peter, a Ghanaian-American 8th-grader from Aurora, Colorado,
was one of over 100 top science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
students from across the USA who were invited to the 2016 White House Science Fair and got to meet President Obama.

The fair is a hands-on showcase of student innovation – robots,
prototypes, tools to help fight cancer and climate change – all
researched, designed and built by young American scientists.
Simon-Peter and two of his schoolmates from Horizon Middle School,
Maya Max-Villard, 13, and Grayson Fast, 14, showcased a new artificial
leg they designed and built using computer design and 3-D printing of
prototypes.
The innovation is said to have been inspired by a US Army veteran
they met who needed a more comfortable and functional prosthetic limb.
The three teenagers set to work and came up with the artificial leg
that now allows the amputee to hike, manage uneven terrain and even
skateboard.

The part designed by Simon-Peter is said to be what makes the prosthesis unique.
His STEM teacher, Ms. Mel Possehl, was quoted as saying, “…with the
design [Simon Frimpong] made, the bottom comes off. So you have a
walking part, then you have a part that hooks onto a longboard or a
snowboard, then you have a part that hooks onto skis, and then a part
that can do multiple things. It’s a multiple-use prototype.”
The 13-year-old scientist was also selected as finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national competition.

WAEC NOW FLYING EXAM PAPERS TO STOP LEAKAGE
![]() |
| Rev. Nii Nmai Ollennu, Head of Ghana National Office, WAEC |
Sources say the Council now flies examination questions to various regions on the morning of the paper, before they are distributed.
Previously, the question papers were transported to the various centers via road. It is unclear however how this new system of transportation will curb leakages.
For several years, WAEC has been hit with several leakages. This has led to the cancellation of exams with pressure piling on the council to put its house in order.
The National Association of Graduate Teachers, NAGRAT, has called on the the governing board of the WAEC to be dissolved for a new one to be constituted.
President John Dramani Mahama has also expressed government’s disappointment over the constant leakage of examination papers, and asked the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to put its house in order to protect the integrity of its certificates.

OCCULTISM AT WESLEY GIRLS - 22 STUDENTS CAUGHT
According to some students who spoke to Starrfmonline.com on condition of anonymity, the culprits were grabbed during their ceremony to induct a new leader for the sect as the previous leader is expected to graduate in June this year.
One of the students disclosed that occultism in the school is prevalent and has been around for the last 23 years.
Most of the students nabbed were first and second year students who had been initiated. The current leader of the group is reported to be in Abban House, a very popular House of the Methodist school.
The occultists who are yet to be penalized by authorities of the school have been handed over to the Methodist Church in Cape Coast to help resolve the matter, Starrfmonline.com checks show.
The situation has, however, created fear and panic amongst students and parents who are alarmed their children could be brainwashed.
The source also confirmed to Starrfmonline.com that the occultists have a special book with various teachings which they use to brainwash and recruit fresh students into their group so the tradition does not fritter away after their departure.
The source revealed that the occultists argue that not all students can be Christians and must be allowed to perform their rituals.
The source also added that the students try to indoctrinate their colleagues by stating that there is nothing immoral about masturbation and lesbianism.
They also hold the view that premarital sex is not a sin contrary to what the Bible says and that there is no need asking for forgiveness of sins since Jesus’ death atoned for all sins.
The source revealed that similar groups were scattered in schools in the Eastern, Greater Accra and the Volta regions while other groups could be found in other institutions.
Several calls placed to the headmistress and other authorities of the school have been futile.
Meanwhile, the presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Cape Coast, Rev. Abekah Wilson said he was yet to be informed about the issue when Starrfmonline.com contacted him

VIDEO: PROPHET TB JOSHUA PREDICTS TERROR ATTACKS ON GHANA AND NIGERIA
![]() |
| Prophet TB Joshua |
A 2:56s video culled from a live sermon on Sunday April 10 that aired on the Emmanuel TV channel shows the prophet urging thousands of his SCOAN congregants to begin sporadic prayers for the two countries in order to scuttle the ‘evil plans’ of the unnamed attackers.
The Prophet was even specific on days on which the attackers will strike, predicting the attacks will take place at gathering of people.
“I am seeing Thursday, Friday, Saturday –if I may say Thursday – because these evil people they are very funny. Anything can just happen. You will be very shocked to see what will happen, because when the prayer is going in this direction they [attackers] change to [another] direction.
“I see Thursday, Friday. Pray for these two nations – Nigeria and Ghana – over gathering in any way; over attack. I am seeing attack and that will be in a foreign way. The attack will come not in a local way. So please open your lips and pray for these two nations for protection” he told congregants.
He would however not state whether the said Thursday or Friday or Saturday would be in this month or the next, explaining “not necessarily this week, because it is a battle between the evil spirit and the holy spirit.”
TB Joshua has sparked controversy both in Nigeria and abroad with his prophesy, spiritual healing methods and utterances.
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (FPN), the umbrella association for Pentecostal churches in Africa’s most populous country, has declared the popular Prophet as an anti-Christ, claiming leader of the global church is a false prophet.
Despite this and other fierce attacks against JB Joshua, he has a strong following across the world, especially in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa

OBINIM - "JESUS CHRIST MUST BE STUPID TO WATCH ME USE JUJU"
![]() |
| Bishop Daniel Obinim |
According to the pastor, Jesus Christ must be stupid to watch him use black magic spells (Juju) to woo unsuspecting believers.
The embattled Bishop recently revealed that he has the spiritual capacity to turn into animal creatures.
According to Bishop Obinim, his capacity to turn into an animal has nothing to do with occultism and that the ‘spiritual blessing’ is mainly aimed at bringing down his critics and opponents, insisting it is not black magic inherited but of God.
The comment was dissected heavily by some sections of the public, with most bashing him.
In a latest interview with Kumasi-based Nhyira FM, Bishop Obinim wondered why it has taken God so long in responding to his supposed questionable dealings.
“I have never sought powers from any god or fetish priest since I was born; if I’m using juju for my pastoral work then Jesus Christ must be a stupid man, because I have a congregation of over 50,000. So until when will God take his spirit away from me or kill me if I use juju. I hear people say all the time that I’ve consulted occult powers for my work, yet my church continuous to flourish.

UNIVERSITIES MUST CONDUCT ENTRANCE EXAMS - PROF STEPHEN ADEI
![]() |
| Prof. Stephen Adei |
Prof. Adei’s call follows the recent reported leakage in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The Oral English, Integrated Science and Social Studies papers were reportedly leaked with pictures on social media showing students solving the questions.
A similar incident occurred in 2015 during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which led to the cancellation of the leaked papers.
Professor Adei intimated that, the integrity of the exams conducted at the High School level, should be improved or else tertiary institutions in the country will cease the admission of students with certificates from WAEC.
“I don’t see any reason why the main universities cannot conduct their own entrance examination. I think it’s getting to a time whereby if these things continue they will not accept WAEC results. I think there must be alternatives but the alternatives may be the universities conducting their own examination,” he noted.
WAEC boss must resign
The former Rector in an interview with Citi News, also backed calls for the leadership of WAEC to resign over the leakage.
He argued that the best thing for WAEC to do now is to accept responsibility for their continuous failure to uphold the integrity of their exams. Prof. Adei wants WAEC to take an introspective look at the its processes in order to improve the system.
“For the past two years, there’s been some examination malpractices except that it is much more grand and they are using social media so that as soon as it leaks in one school, then immediately it goes everywhere. So the situation is getting very serious.”
Prof. Adei said, “first of all, whoever is responsible, the leadership of WAEC must accept responsibility. They must not accept responsibility and only say we are investigating. In other countries, somebody will resign because somebody will accept responsibility for that.”
“I think that we are allowing people commit wrongs without any consequences…unless we start dealing with people in high places who allow certain things including corruption go under them, we are not going to get anywhere.”

HEADMASTER AND 2 OTHERS ARRESTED OVER WASSCE EXAM LEAKAGE
Three people including the Headmaster of Ascension Senior High School in the Ashanti region have been arrested over examination malpractices which have hit the country.
Three major papers of the WASSCE have leaked, but WAEC has served notice it will not cancel them.
“The candidate led a [WAEC] depot keeper who caught her in the action to the female literature teacher. According to the girl, the female teacher gave her the answers to be given to the students in the examination hall,” the Ashanti Regional Branch Controller for WAEC, Alex Bosompem, told Accra-based Joy FM.
He said the headmaster, Ekow Quashie, also had in his possession some yet-to-be-written papers on his mobile phone, hence his arrest.
Meanwhile, President John Mahama has described as disappointing the reported leakage of examination papers in the ongoing Senior High School Certificate Examination organised by the West African Examination Council.
According to him, WAEC after a similar incident last year, assured government of its readiness to introduce reforms to curb the examination malpractices.
“WAEC is an independent body and so government can’t interfere in its operational affairs. But government wishes to call on WAEC to put its house in order,” the President stated.
He continued: “It is most discouraging when students have prepared for three solid years only to be confronted with incidences of examination leakages. Last year in the BECE exams, the BNI was called to investigate an examination leakage and two people are being prosecuted.
"WAEC informed government that it is going to conduct reforms in its exams preparations. We are therefore disappointed at news of a possible leakage of the secondary school certificate exams. We urge WAEC to urgently work to plug all loopholes to protect the integrity of the exams and I have asked the BNI to work with WAEC to deal drastically with anyone found culpable”.
The two others are a female English Literature Teacher of the same school and a student. According to West African Examination Council (WAEC) officials, the trio attempted to sneak answers to candidates who were writing the Literature paper and were nabbed.
