KNUST SRC PRESIDENTIAL CANDITATE JOSEPH MIREKU RELEASES HIS POLICY PLAN

Joseph Mireku is a strong candidate for the position of SRC (Student Representative Council) President in the 2016 KNUST SRC elections. He is running for the the elections with Kwame Nkrumah as his Vice.

In advance of the upcoming election which is going to take place on the Thursday 31st of March, Joseph Mireku has released his policy document which he hopes to put in place when elected as SRC President of KNUST.

Items stated in the Policy Document are as follows:

CONTINUITY AGENDA

Academics
1. Summer Hut Project.
rapid completion of the summer hut project neat the royal parade ground. the final plan will be to install lights for the might study and electricity to charge laptops and other gadgets to aid in learning and academic work. Part of the SRC development levy would be used to finance the project.

2. Bus Pass
Completion of the bus pass policy. This will provide very cheap transport for students to and from campus and halls to the classroom areas. Students can board the buses upon showing a special chit.

Health
 1. Emergency center in all traditional halls
final phase and completion of this project. One room will be acquired in each of the traditional halls 
and converted into emergency center. it will be provided with basic medical supplies to deal with emergencies before patients are taken to the hospital finally.

Welfare
1. KBN (Ketewaa Biara Nsua)
         - The use of auto-generated list of students from less endowed areas. The university has records of students from less endowed areas. We will make use of such a list and designate 20% of total KBN slots to students from less endowed areas.

          - Payment of fees owed
Due to financial difficulties some students default in payment of school fees and thus are owing in terms of fees. KBN will not only be used to pay fees for the next academic year but also for clearing the previous fees owed. This will be done in conjunction with the Students Finance Office and the University accounts office.

2. WIFI
Expansion of KNUST WiFi to Off Campus.
a lot has been done to provide internet access on campus. We will continue the ongoing work and ensure  that WiFi is expanded to Off Campus.

NEW POLICIES

ACADEMICS

1. Night Classrooms.
In order to solve the inadequate study area problem, we propose to advocate and push through a 14hr classroom area. The Central Classroom Block (CCB) will be used to facilitate night time study, since ir will be centralized. Security and other provisions will be directed o a central point.

2. Procurement of P.A systems for classrooms.
A crucial part of academics on campus is the lecture periods. However most classrooms are no equipped with P.A systems in hearing the lecturer. Work will also be done to repair and effectively maintain those already installed


SPORTS

1. Tile Sponsorship and Incentives
the SRC will ensure a lucrative sponsorship package for sportsmen and women. This will take the form of sporting equipment, welfare, and training cost. the SRC will also dedicate percentage of funds to cover sports costs during the GUSA and mini-GUSA games

2. Accommodation
The SRC will vigorously aid sportsmen and women to secure accommodation in the traditional halls

3. Academic Incentives
Sportsmen and women who will trail examinations will be exempted from paying the registration fees for re-sit. They will also receive tutorials to aid them in resitting the trailed papers.

4. Lighting system for Paa Joe Stadium
Installing of flood lights at Paa Joe to facilitate training in the late evening and at night.

 SECURITY
1. One Policeman, One Hostel
There will be one residential policeman in each of the registered hostels off campus. Please find more details on our "360 security plan" document.

2. Alarms and sirens triggered from central point in the hostel.
This policy will ensure that, in the event of a break-in, the porter will sound the alarm. This will scare the robbers and enable others to call the police. Students now entering the affected hostels will be alert and know what to do.

ENTERTAINMENT
More efforts to promote arts and entertainment. There will be a competitive program to unearth talents of students in KNUST.

INFRASTRUCTURE 
1. Canopy Walkway from COS to business School
The bare stretch of road from the College Of Science  to the Business School needs a canopy walkway to shelter students from the sweltering sun and rain. This will be
Funded by the SRC.

2. Africa Hall fans project.
The ladies in Africa have always had difficulty with the fans in their rooms. Due to the relatively small number in Africa hall, it is difficult to mobilize enough funds for such a large scale project. The SRC will procure wall fans for all rooms. This will be done in two phases: Phase1- The SRC will cover the costs of these wall fans. Phase 2 - Africa Hall will cover the cost of installation and maintenance.
