AFTERMATH OF GHANASS FIRE - OVER 500 STUDENTS ASKED TO GO HOME



After the fire that razed the girls dormitory on the rainy evening of Thursday 17 March, First and Second year students of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS) at Koforidua in the Eastern region have been asked to go until further notice.

Nevertheless, final year students will stay and continue with preparations for their final exams.

The fire outbreak has rendered over 500 students homeless since the blaze consumed most of the rooms housing them.
Some of the affected students resorted to the classrooms to pass the night while others were made to put up with their colleagues nearby.

But after an emergency meeting Friday, the school authorities asked the students to go home and return after an alternative accommodation is arranged for them.

The Eastern regional minister Mavis Ama Frimpong has also revealed that President Mahama has promised to construct a bigger dormitory to replace the destroyed building in the shortest possible time.

The Ghana National Fire Service has also commenced investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, donations are also pouring in for the affected students after Koforidua Methodist diocese donated panties,sanitary pads, towels, and 20 mattresses worth GHc5, 000.

The New Juaben North Member of Parliament, Hon. Nana Adjei Boateng also donated GHc10, 000 on Friday to the school authorities.
